DJI Mic Mini 2 – Real-World Review and Testing

root's picture

The DJI Mic Mini 2 is a compact wireless microphone system designed for creators, vloggers and anyone who needs better audio than a camera or smartphone's built-in microphone can provide.

For this review, I decided to take a different approach. Rather than concentrating primarily on specifications and features, I wanted to find out how the DJI Mic Mini 2 performs when actually used in the real world.

So I took it with me on vacation and used it across several countries and environments, including Belgrade, Zagreb, Dubrovnik, Plitvice Lakes, Lignano, Monaco, the Côte d’Azur and Bucharest.

Why I tested it this way

Microphone specifications can tell you a lot, but they don't necessarily tell you what a microphone will sound like when you're walking through a busy city, running along the coast, standing near traffic or trying to record your voice next to a waterfall.

The DJI Mic Mini 2 therefore became part of my travel gear during the trip.

I recorded in a variety of situations and environments, including:

  • City streets
  • Busy pedestrian areas
  • Indoor locations
  • Seaside promenades
  • Windy environments
  • Running and walking
  • Areas with traffic and background noise
  • Natural environments
  • Waterfalls
  • Tourist areas and crowds

This produced a much more varied collection of real-world audio samples than a conventional studio test.

Audio processing

One of the most important aspects of this review is that the audio samples are intended to represent what the microphone actually records.

Unless specifically mentioned otherwise, the samples are presented without additional post-processing such as EQ, noise reduction, voice enhancement or other audio processing.

This allows the listener to judge the microphone itself rather than the editing applied afterwards.

Real-world locations

Belgrade

The first tests were recorded in Belgrade and Zagreb, including urban environments and busy public areas.

These recordings provide a good indication of how the microphone handles normal city ambience, pedestrians and background noise while the subject is moving.

Lignano Sabbiadoro

The seaside environment around Lignano provided a completely different acoustic environment.

The combination of wind, waves and open space makes this useful for evaluating speech clarity and wind handling.

Plitvice Lakes

Plitvice Lakes was one of the more demanding environments because of the constant sound of running water and waterfalls.

Instead of creating artificial background noise in a controlled environment, this provided a genuine example of trying to record speech while surrounded by a very loud natural sound source.

Monaco and the Côte d’Azur

The Monaco and Côte d’Azur recordings introduced several additional scenarios, including walking, running, traffic, open spaces and seaside environments.

One of the tests involved running towards Monaco while wearing the microphone, providing a real-world example of recording while moving rather than standing in front of a camera.

Bucharest

Additional tests were recorded in Bucharest, including locations with very different surroundings and acoustic characteristics.

These recordings were useful for comparing the microphone's performance across urban environments.

DJI Mic Mini 2 configurations tested

I tested two DJI Mic Mini 2 configurations:

DJI Mic Mini 2 – 2 TX + 1 RX

This configuration includes two transmitters and one receiver, making it suitable for recording two people or using two transmitters for different recording scenarios.

DJI Mic Mini 2 – 1 TX + 1 Mobile RX

This configuration is aimed more directly at smartphone users and provides a compact setup when a traditional camera receiver is not required.

Both configurations use the same basic microphone/transmitter platform, so the audio tests are applicable to the microphone itself rather than being specific to the packaging configuration.

Features

The DJI Mic Mini 2 includes features intended to make wireless recording easier for creators, including:

  • Wireless transmission
  • Noise cancellation
  • Multiple voice-tone presets
  • Automatic clipping protection
  • Compact transmitters
  • Charging case options
  • Smartphone connectivity
  • DJI OsmoAudio compatibility

For this review, however, the features themselves are not the main focus. Most of them can be demonstrated or explained from the specifications. The purpose of this review is to show what the microphone actually sounds like when used outside a controlled environment.

DJI Mic Mini 2 vs DJI Mic Mini 2S

DJI has subsequently introduced the Mic Mini 2S.

The Mic Mini 2S adds several features, most notably internal recording with 24-bit and 32-bit-float options, built-in storage and support for a larger number of transmitters.

The core microphone/audio characteristics are very similar between the two models, however, so the real-world audio recordings in this review should also provide a useful indication of the audio performance of the Mic Mini 2S.

The Mic Mini 2S was not tested in this review. All recordings shown here were made using the DJI Mic Mini 2.

DJI Mic Mini 2

  • No internal recording
  • Up to 2 transmitters per receiver
  • Up to approximately 11.5 hours transmitter battery life
  • Up to approximately 48 hours total with charging case

DJI Mic Mini 2S

  • Internal recording
  • 24-bit and 32-bit-float recording
  • Approximately 14.5 GB internal storage
  • Up to 4 transmitters per receiver
  • Four-channel output
  • Slightly lower stated battery life than the Mic Mini 2

The 2S is therefore not simply a completely different microphone. Its main advantage is the additional recording and connectivity functionality.

Conclusion

The main reason for testing the DJI Mic Mini 2 this way was simple: a microphone is ultimately a tool for recording real people in real environments.

A specification sheet can tell you the wireless range, battery life and available features, but it can't tell you whether the microphone sounds good when you're running along the Côte d’Azur, standing next to a waterfall, walking through a busy city or dealing with wind at the seaside.

That's what this review attempts to demonstrate.

After using the DJI Mic Mini 2 across multiple countries and a wide range of environments, I found the real-world testing considerably more useful than simply going through the feature list.

For anyone considering the Mic Mini 2, I recommend listening to the actual location recordings in the video and judging the microphone based on the type of environments in which you expect to use it.
