Hello guys,

In this article I will show you personal thoughts and tests regarding this HDD enclosure from Raidsonic: Icy Box IB-3805-C31.

Key features (from product's data-sheet):
•External 5-bay SINGLE System for 5x 3.5" SATA I/II/III HDD
•HDD capacity unlimited
•Energy saving by supporting auto power off mode for HDDs and case fan •EASY-Swap, assembling by trayless and toolless design
•Supported RAID level: SINGLE
•External data interface: USB 3.1 (Gen 2) with UASP Support
•Transfer rates: USB 3.1 up to 10 Gbit/s
•Additional USB 3.1 (Gen 2) Type-CTM HUB interface
•Hard drives individual ON-/OFF-switch without loss of USB connection •Plug & Play and Hot Swap
•LED for: Power, HDD in use and access
•Windows® macOS®

I will not go trough all key features but what I did in the video below was speed test. This was the most important for me as it was advertised to 10gbit/s (1.25GB/s).
The speed test was done with 5 x 4TB Seagate Ironwolf NAS disks and went up to 1.1GB/s.
Of course, you arrive at this speed if you have at least USB 3.1. The test in this video was done via thunderbolt 3 port which is way faster (up to 40 Gbps).
As tool, I used gdd (Gnu dd) because I needed visual progress and dd that comes with macos does not have this. Gdd was installed via macports with package coreutils.
I provided also a weird situation when I had to return the first one I got because one of the trays was unusable.

Another very nice feature I did not mention in the video is the capability of reading S.M.A.R.T. data.
The information available via smartctl tool is full, unaltered, same as if the disk is attached directly (via sata cable for example).
