The TCL 34R83Q is a 34-inch curved ultrawide monitor designed for gaming, productivity, and content creation. Boasting a 3440x1440 resolution, a 170Hz refresh rate, and HDR support, it promises an immersive experience - but is it all smooth sailing? Well… not exactly.

The ending of the title is aimed at those videos that simply recycle photos and footage from other sources while rambling about information already available on the product's official page. This review, however, is based on my own purchased unit, thoroughly tested, and most importantly, completely unbiased. I’m not sponsored by anyone, so my opinion is 100% independent and uninfluenced.

HDR & Heat: The Unexpected Side Effect
Power consumption exceeds 110W with HDR, making the monitor noticeably hot, especially in the upper center. Heat is common in HDR displays, but prolonged use might be uncomfortable. Normal usage stays around 50W, generating less heat.
Connectivity: USB-C? Well, Sort Of...
The TCL 34R83Q offers USB-C, HDMI, and DisplayPort, but USB-C has limitations:
- USB-C file transfers are USB 2.0 speeds, while using USB-B (with DP/HDMI) unlocks USB 3.0 speeds.
- Changing resolution or refresh rate disconnects USB storage—a major inconvenience.
- Phone Mode: Capped at 60Hz, scales weirdly, and doesn’t support higher resolutions. Your phone looks fine, but Windows/macOS feels like potato mode!
Why is USB-C acting weird?
Cheap hub implementation or firmware issue?
Power delivery issue—USB resets when the GPU reconfigures display.
Runs through the display controller, triggering resets with resolution changes.
Gaming & Display Performance
170Hz refresh rate = ultra-smooth gameplay.
Adaptive Sync helps, but flickering can occur.
PIP/PBP scaling is odd, stretching certain windows.
Curved display: Immersive, but after long sessions, flat screens may look convex—your brain needs to adjust!
Max Resolutions & Nits
HDMI: 3440x1440 @ 100Hz, HDR 1450 nits
DP: 3440x1440 @ 170Hz, HDR 1405 nits
USB-C: 3440x1440 @ 170Hz (144Hz HDR)
Design & Build: Takes Over Your Desk
The stand is HUGE, occupying most of your desk. VESA mounting recommended!
Big power brick, but at least it's external to manage heat.
Includes HDMI, DP & USB-C cables, but the USB-C is only 1m long (while others are 1.5m).
Backlight Bleed & Display Quirks
Noticeable backlight bleed, especially in dark settings.
Ultrawide movies? Expect vertical black bars for non-21:9 content.
Final Thoughts
Great gaming performance, high refresh rate, and ultrawide immersion at a good price (especially if discounted). But quirks like USB-C issues, HDR heat, backlight bleed, and a massive stand could be deal-breakers. If you can live with its oddities, it’s a solid ultrawide option—just expect a few surprises!
